چکیده

[1] Although shelf seas account for only 7% of the oceanic surface area, recent observations demonstrate that they host significant ocean-atmosphere CO2 fluxes. A mechanism implicated in driving a significant CO2 sink in the temperate shelf seas is the Continental Shelf Pump. Here we present an analysis of the impact of sea-level rise, and the consequent flooding of continental shelves, on the growth of the continental shelf CO2 pump over the last deglacial transition. We combine reconstructions of shelf pa laeogeography, ba thymet ry and t ides , wi th contemporary shelf sea – atmosphere CO2 flux estimates, to demonstrate the potential of the expanding shelf seas to have impacted on the global carbon cycle, via the continental shelf CO2 pump, over the past 21,000 years and, by inference, earlier glacial-interglacial cycles. Report of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea

Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...

Early deglacial onset of southwestern Greenland ice-sheet retreat on the continental shelf

The Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) advanced onto the continental shelf during the last glacial period. While deglacial records for when the GrIS withdrew onto the modern coastline are relatively abundant, the timing of early GrIS retreat on the shelf is poorly constrained. Here we use planktic foraminiferal d18O, sediment grain size, sedimentation rates, and 14C ages in southeastern Davis Strait co...

Impact of self-attraction and loading effects induced by shelf mass loading on projected regional sea level rise

[1] We investigate the effect of self-attraction and loading (SAL) induced by the projected accumulation of sea water on shallow continental shelf areas. Using output from a climate model, we compute 21st century changes in regional steric sea surface height and find that steric changes are largest over the deep ocean and relatively small on the shallow continental shelves. The resulting redist...

Wind-driven mixing causes a reduction in the strength of the continental shelf carbon pump in the Chukchi Sea

[1] The Chukchi Sea is thought to be a globally important sink of atmospheric CO2 due to the summertime drawdown of surface pCO2 by phytoplankton and subsequent shelf-to-basin transport of CO2-enriched subsurface waters into the upper halocline of the Arctic Ocean. Here we show that annually occurring storm-induced mixing events during autumn months disrupt water column stratification and stir ...

A model of the methane cycle, permafrost, and hydrology of the Siberian continental margin

A two-dimensional model of a sediment column, with Darcy fluid flow, biological and thermal methane production, and permafrost and methane hydrate formation, is subjected to glacial–interglacial cycles in sea level, alternately exposing the continental shelf to the cold atmosphere during glacial times and immersing it in the ocean in interglacial times. The glacial cycles are followed by a “lon...
